Breastfeeding in Public - Letter
July 7, 2010
Toronto Public Health (TPH) is seeking the support of Toronto Business Improvement Associations (BIA) offices and Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA) in the creation of supportive environments for women to breastfeed. In a recently released TPH staff report, Breastfeeding in Toronto Promoting Supportive Environments, it was recommended that the Medical Officer of Health inform Toronto BIA offices and TABIAs of the Breastfeeding Friendly Campaign and request assistance in encouraging businesses to become Breastfeeding Friendly including posting the Breastfeeding Friendly window decal.
The right to breastfeed undisturbed in a public place is protected by the Ontario Human Rights Commission Policy on Pregnancy and Breastfeeding. Research conducted by TPH has clearly demonstrated the importance of creating supportive environments for breastfeeding women. This research found that mothers who felt comfortable breastfeeding in public locations were 2.9 times more likely to continue to breastfeed to six months than mothers who were not comfortable breastfeeding (or did not breastfeed) in public.
In 2007, all City of Toronto facilities including agencies, boards and commissions were sent a Breastfeeding Friendly window decal to signify Toronto's support of breastfeeding women. Toronto's Breastfeeding in Public Policy Breastfeeding in Public requires City of Toronto staff to support breastfeeding mothers and to allow them to breastfeed in any facility or public place operated by the City or agencies, boards and commissions.
In 2008, Toronto Public Health launched the Breastfeeding Friendly Campaign. All restaurants in the City of Toronto with seating areas were sent a Breastfeeding Friendly information package that included a Breastfeeding Friendly window decal, an employee guide, and a Health Canada letter. In 2009, large retail malls and movie theatres were sent a similar package and requested to support women to breastfeed anytime and anywhere. All were asked to promote their Breastfeeding Friendly business on the Toronto Public Health Breastfeeding Friendly website http://www.toronto.ca/health/breastfeeding/friendlyplaces.htm
In the next few weeks Toronto Public Health staff will be contacting you to arrange a meeting to discuss the promotion of the Breastfeeding Friendly Campaign to Toronto Businesses, including the posting of the Breastfeeding Friendly window decal. I look forward to meeting with you soon.
Sincerely,
Olga Jovkovic
