Transition to HST
The provinces of Ontario and British Columbiahave announced their intention to implement the harmonized sales tax (HST),which will replace existing provincial sales taxes and the federal goods andservices tax (GST) in those provinces beginning July 1, 2010 and will beadministered by the Canada Revenue Agency.
Ontario and British Columbia have announced point of sale rebatesfor the provincial part of the HST for certain goods currently not subject toprovincial sales tax, as well as partial rebates for the provincial part of theHST on new housing.
The HST rates, including the provincial andfederal parts, would be as follows: provincial part + federal part = HST
Ontario: 8% 5% 13%British Columbia: 7% 5% 12%
What does this mean for businesses that make taxable supplies inOntario and British Columbia?
• The HST would generallyfollow the same rules and tax base as the GST.
• Businesses that are registered for the GSTwould automatically be registered for the HST and, as a result, would continueto use their current GST/HST account number for the HST.
• GST/HST registrants may have to update theiraccounting and point-of-sale systems to accommodate the change in rate and thenew point-of-sale rebates.
• GST/HST registrants wouldreport their HST according to their current GST filing frequency.
Transitional rules would apply for:
• tangible personalproperty;
• services;
• intangible personalproperty;
• continuous supplies;
• imported goods andimported taxable supplies;
• goods and servicesbrought into the HST provinces; and
• housing and other typesof real property.

Village Photo Promotion
The Toronto Association of BIA’s “Think Big-Buy Local” advertising campaign was launched on Monday, September 14th.
Nine different designed posters will be placed on 200 bus shelters, and 300 subway cars and station locations throughout the city encouraging all citizens to shop in their local neighbourhood- to think big but buy local.
John Kiru, Executive Director, TABIA, has set a goal to boost all BIA businesses throughout the city to aid in the recovery of the recession. “The best way to do this is by TABIA supporting the efforts of all BIAs and their local businesses,” Kiru believes. The theme for “Support Your Neighborhood Businesses, Think Big-Buy Local” was developed to meet the needs of each and every small business operation in all parts of the City of Toronto.
Astral Media and the City of Toronto have joined together with TABIA in supporting this business promotional campaign by donating a large number of the advertising location spaces. The attachment shows the nine different copy themes with appropriate photographs for each message promoting a different kind of business in each panel.
Don't forget to join us for the 40th Anniversary of BIAs in 2010!
