Rioting and the Law

SAVE THE DATE………

Toronto’s G20 Summit in June 2010 had a huge impact on our BIAs and for some, the effects are still being felt. The recent hockey riots in Vancouver and the Occupy Toronto encampment reminded us just how vulnerable our Neighbourhoods are to situations beyond our control. Next Monday evening, January 30th, TABIA invites you and your members to attend an information session with Member of Parliament Blake Edwards as he explains his Private Member’s Bill C-309 that will deter riots and protect public safety by unmasking criminals.

"My Private Member's Bill C-309 is intended first and foremost to prevent riots from escalating by giving law enforcement a new tool to strip away the anonymity that criminals depend on to avoid prosecution for their actions during such disturbances," said Blake Richards, the Member of Parliament for Wild Rose, Alberta. "I welcome this opportunity to speak directly to members of Toronto's business community to explain the provisions of my proposed bill and how I believe it will help to deter the kind of damage we witnessed during in the city in June 2010."

Please join us on Monday, January 30, 2012 in The Market Kitchen, upstairs at the St. Lawrence Market, 92 Front Street East, Toronto, M5E 1C3. Networking over light refreshements will take place from 6pm to 6:30 with the presentation starting at 6:30pm followed by a question and answer period.

Please confirm your attendance with the TABIA office and we encourage you to share this invitation with your Board and BIA Members.

Public Appeal For Funding

PUBLIC APPEAL: PLEASE HELP TO SAVE ONTARIO’S SENIOR SAFETY LINE

Ontario’s population of residents aged 65 and over is projected to more than double by 2036. As this segment of our population continues to increase, reports of elder abuse are skyrocketing. The Senior Safety Line (SSL 1-866-299-1011) is an Ontario-wide toll-free hotline for seniors who are experiencing abuse. Unfortunately the hotline is in desperate need of funding to continue operating.

The SSL currently operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is at 100% capacity. Since its inception in 2009 the hotline has helped over 13,000 callers in over 150 languages, 74% of these callers were between 55-64 years of age. It differs from other critical assistance lines in Ontario as the counselors are trained to work specifically with vulnerable seniors. It is the only hotline of its kind in Ontario.

The immediate need is to raise $75,000, which will sustain the line for another 6 months while additional funding is secured. The hotline has been operating on a three-year grant provided by The Ontario Trillium Foundation which runs out in March. A donation of $20 would sponsor one phone call for a senior in need of immediate assistance. The Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse is asking the public to please help keep the SSL operating. This vital hotline simply cannot be shut down. Help is desperately needed now. Donations can be made at www.onpea.org.

The Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse is a non-profit organization - a tax receipt will be issued for all donations starting at $20.00. 100% of donations will benefit the SSL. Charitable Number : 88900 0790 RR0001

For more information regarding the Senior Safety Line (1-866-299-1011) and the critical work of The Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (ONPEA) please visit www.onpea.org. Please also visit www.acupoftea.ca for more information on ONPEA’s on-going fundraising efforts.

WINTER NEWS From City’s Ward 27

Dear Friends, Residents and Businesses,

It is the new year and a time to look forward to the opportunities ahead. The last year has seen a remarkable amount of activity in Ward 27 and 2012 is shaping up to be just as significant for our neighbourhoods and the city.

At City Hall, I can report that we are seeing real progress with establishing new and consistent guidelines for Heritage Conservation Districts that will help us preserve vital historical neighbourhoods for generations to come. I am working with other progressive councillors to keep libraries open across the city that may be faced with closures. My motion to remove Toronto from the jurisdiction of the Ontario Municipal Board was unanimously passed at the Planning and Growth Management Committee and will come to Council for a vote after the 2012 budget.

Locally, we had a very successful gardening initiative in Summerhill and can celebrate the tremendous work of the North Rosedale Ratepayer's Association in building a new playground in Rosedale Park. In addition, I have been advocating for the South Rosedale Ratepayer's Association's desire to install a significant neighbourhood gateway marker on Crescent Road. Planning has started for an exciting new playground in Allan Gardens and Bell utility boxes have been made into community works of art.

While many things are going well locally, there are real challenges facing our Ward and the city. The core services review, launched by the Mayor's office, is now being implemented through the budget process and important services are facing deep budget cuts. This will negatively impact public transportation, children's programs, daycare, long-term care, shelter services, libraries, public health, urban planning, parks, forestry, recreation, community outreach programs, and many other areas that are essential to sustaining Toronto as a vibrant and compassionate city. The Moore Park Lawn Bowling Club and other groups like them in the city have already been challenged with cutbacks. I continue to support them in their efforts to serve the community.

As a city that prides itself on its accomplishments, we will have to come together in the coming months and years in a way we have not for quite some time- to make sure that the most vulnerable families do not fall behind; to make sure that a generation does not lose access to something as simple as their morning breakfasts; to begin rebuilding a dialogue where we remember what we are capable of achieving together.

Please enjoy this newsletter and visit our website for community updates at www.ward27news.ca. I am grateful for the wonderful neighbourhoods I have had the opportunity to serve this past year.

Respectfully yours,

Kristyn Wong-Tam
